He was created in a laboratory, according to the elf with the green complexion. He was a familiar, and the result of magical experimentation—namely the implantation of muscle tissue into the tendrils and roots of carnivorous plants and fungi, enabling him to move about and capture prey. While working on his subject, the elf would happily exclaim, "You are my first great success, Chemchim." But he was not the last, and before long, the elf grew disinterested and neglected him completely. Bored and hungry, Chemchim broke from captivity and wandered into the forest in search of food.
